Miami County Democrats

Precinct Committee Person

What is a Precinct Committee Person?

All Democratic Party Precinct Committee Persons (PCPs) in Miami County belong to the Central Committee (CC), which is the governing body of the Democratic Party of Miami County. As a PCP, you have a voice and vote in the party when we make decisions that affect your community.

PCPs are organized by precinct. As a PCP, you are the Party's most powerful outreach tool. It is your job to represent your neighbors in the Party and to represent the Party to your neighbors.

Responsibilities as a Member of the Central Committee

1) Actively support Democratic candidates endorsed by the Miami County Democratic Party and Kansas Democratic Party.

2) Participate in central committee meetings and training to improve voter education, preparation, and motivation.

3) Assist party leaders with distribution of candidate literature, fundraising for the Miami County Democratic Party, and canvassing voters outside of your assigned precinct.

4) Volunteer with campaigns as needed to help with phone banks, canvassing, or other voter outreach activities.

5) Vote on county party leadership every two years in even numbered years.

Responsibilities to the Voters in Your Home Precinct

1) Be an advocate for voter registration and voting rights!

2) Help voters get informed on candidates and issues on the ballot for your precinct.

3) Encourage local Democrats to get involved by supporting the party and candidates via our volunteer and donor outreach programs.

4) Stay in touch with constituents in any way possible; listen to their questions or concerns, then bring these concerns back to party leaders if further action is needed.

5) Support and promote our candidates by increasing voter turnout in every election. This may include: recruiting and organizing volunteers to help cover the polls, canvassing high traffic areas to encourage voter turnout, or assisting registered Democrats in getting to the polls.

There are several ways to canvass voters effectively.

Here are some of the most common methods:

1) Door-to-Door Canvassing: This is one of the most effective campaign strategies used by political parties, independent candidates, and grassroots campaigns. It allows them to find common ground in an authentic, face-to-face way with those who determine elections. A typical canvasser spends around 1 to 3 minutes at a door, averaging about 20 doors per hour.

2) Phone Canvassing: This method involves calling potential voters to discuss the campaign, answer questions, and encourage voter turnout.

3) Text Canvassing: With the rise of digital communication, text canvassing has become a popular method. It allows campaigns to reach a large number of people quickly and efficiently.

4) Direct Mail: This involves sending physical mail to potential voters. The mail typically includes information about the candidate, their platform, and instructions on how to vote.

5) Digital Canvassing: This includes reaching out to potential voters through digital platforms such as social media, email, and campaign websites.

6) Virtual Canvassing: This is a way for candidates to make direct contact with voters without actually seeing them in person. The most common virtual canvassing methods include mailer campaigns, text message campaigns, and phone banking.

What are the prerequisites for becoming a PCP?

You must meet the following two criteria:

  • Your primary residence must be within a Miami County precinct.
  • You must be registered as a Democrat. If you are unsure about your voter status or are not currently registered as a Democrat, you can look it up here.

How do I become a PCP?

There are two ways to become a PCP -- by election or by appointment.

Elected

To be elected a PCP, you need to run for election during the Primary Election that is held during even-numbered years. The next chance to be an elected PCP is this year (2024).
